Dough comes in for small stable
Contrasting the glitz and glamour of the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions was the win of Flash’n Dough in the $100,000 HKROA Magic Millions Country Cup 1400m on Saturday, January 9.
Visiting Cranbourne trainer, Stephen Theodore made his mark on the Gold Coast and is looking at a prolonged stay in the sunshine state.
“The owners have stuck with me and said ‘do what you have to do’ and eventually we got here,” Theodore said.
“They’re a good bunch of blokes, and hopefully they can take me across the road (to the Magic Millions Sales) and we can buy a few more.
“It’s a bit of a struggle with six in work to try and make ends meet. But if we set a goal, we’ve shown we can achieve it like anybody else.
“He might even run at Eagle Farm next Saturday.
“I love the weather.”
Flash’n Dough posted his fourth win from 24 starts, much to the delight of connections who will make good use of the $57,000 prize purse.
The four-year-old gelding by Beautiful Crown (USA) out of Misunderstanding came from wide and well back to bowl over the top of the field.
“He has promised a lot and delivered nothing his first two preparations,” Theodore said. “He is immature and mentally not stable.
“After a good ride from Craig Williams I’m sure there will be plenty of champagne flowing tonight.”
Taking nothing away from the winning connections, but almost half the horses had ran into trouble with 600 metres to travel.
Kiss Kiss had dislodged jockey Jason Holder after jumping from the barriers and Just a Classic and Rapid Magic also had an altercation mid-race which cruelled their chances plus others following the pair.
Our Mr Cashman, with Chris Munce onboard for the Andrew Williamson stable, survived to post a second after taking up the speed for the entire trip. There were two and a quarter lengths splitting the first two placegetters.
A short head further behind was the Danny Griffin-ridden Dance At Midnight for Cessnock-based Robert Davies.
