Performance of Power
Helen Page opened the account for what looked to be a promising day for Gold Coast trainers in race two, the $100,000 Queensland Events Magic Millions 2YO Plate on Saturday, January 9.
Jockey Stathi Katsidis had Power of Ed come from well back in the 1200 metre journey to power over the top of his opposition in an inch-perfect ride.
Katsidis mentioned after dismounting the condition of the track on the rail was “cut up” at the turn. So his astute decision to tail the field and travel down the centre paid off handsomely and set the benchmark for the remainder of the day on the Gold Coast.
Katsidis and Power of Ed did not have it all their own way as the colt by Jetspur, out of Precious Epic, was a little slow on the uptake.
“I rode him back. After the first race I thought there may have been a bit of on pace bias, but it’s good to see one come from near last and winning,” Katsidis said.
“From the 600m he was running nicely. Before that it wasn’t too good.
“At the 600m I thought we should win from here, but he took a while to pick them up. Once he did, he ran away from them for a nice win.”
There was plenty of ground to make up on Paris Blu in the straight, who had set the pace for the entire trip, and looked a good thing with a furlong left to travel for jockey Tony Pattillo and in-form Eagle Farm trainer Barry Baldwin.
Paris Blu fought on gamely to finish second a length and a quarter behind Power of Ed.
Tricarico, with visiting jockey Brad Rawiller onboard, made himself known at the top of the straight with a gifted run just off the pace. The colt could not match the class of the his predecessors and finished third a long neck behind for Randwick trainer David Hayes.
Page said Power of Ed should have been forgiven for his last start seventh, as the ride on Saturday, January 2 at the Gold Coast behind Spirit of Boom left a lot to be desired.
“He wasn’t ridden well, end of story,” she said. “He was ridden back today and like a horse should be.”
The latest outing from Power of Ed marks his second win from only three career starts, however he will be spelled for a crack at the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
“It’s amazing. His first trial was only on December 1 and I didn’t know if he’d come back from that. The time he ran in the trial was faster than Shoot Out’s trial,” Page said.
“It’s nice to see a horse with a turn of foot and he relaxes. All the positive things.”
The colt obviously has plenty of potential, as Shoot Out lined up in the $1 million Queensland Racing Magic Millions 3YO Trophy 1400m as one of the red-hot favourites.
Power of Ed has now repaid his connections handsomely in a short space of time after being purchased for $55,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions sale.
The meaning of the Magic Millions Carnival to Queensland thoroughbred stakeholders, and especially those based on the Gold Coast, was summed up by the reaction of Helen Page and the excitement of owners Michael and Maureen Dunn as they led their winning two-year-old to scale.
“They’re lucky owners and fantastic people to train for and I love the two-year-olds,” Page said.
