New Zealand mare Eleda has thrived since transferring to the Gold Coast winning five of her six starts to date in the Sunshine State.
Under the care of trainer Bryan Guy, Eleda NZ (M4 Deputy Governor USA –Repetition NZ) stepped up the prizemoney stakes a notch further by winning the $100,000 Ormiston College Fillies and Mares Handicap 1200m feature race at Eagle Farm.
The four-year-old had to dig deep in the final few hundred metres to claim the winner’s $64,000 cheque after sitting at the back of the field and forced wide at the turn.
Ridden by Dean Tanti, Eleda struck the post a nose ahead of My First Affair (Bobby El-Issa) who looked to have the win secured 100m from the post.
A short neck separated My First Affair from third place runner Awase Ougi (Lauren Herne).
“She really puts in and finds the line very good,” Guy said.
“She’s not a very big mare but she knows where the winning post is that’s for sure.”
Last start Guy tried the horse over 1400m and came up trumps and believes the mare will progress well over further ground.
“I honestly think the further we go the better she’ll go,” Guy said.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if she goes up to 2000m. She doesn’t pull through the race she just goes to sleep.”
Jumping from barrier seven in her most recent start, Eleda sat third last for the first 600m before Tanti peeled the mare to the outside for a quick dash to clench the win.
But Guy is confident the mare can adapt to racing further forward.
“She doesn’t have to be that far back but they went quick and the previous time we’ve ridden her back in the field is because she’s drawn bad barriers,” Guy said.
“I think the further we go with her and the more ground we get over with her she’ll take a more forward position without having to do any work.”
