The Alan Bailey-trained Tears’n’cheers has continued to prove himself as a consistent horse picking up his second win and first as a three-year-old in the Ord Minnett QTIS 3YO Handicap 1400m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, August 9.
He did so carrying 58kg and Bailey left the race in the capable hands of his regular jockey Glen Colless. “We just leave it up to Glen,” he said.
“We thought we wouldn’t be far away from the leaders but as it was he just lobbed into the best spot right behind the leader and he got the run of the race.”
Colless manoeuvred Tears’n’cheers (G3 Street Cry IRE-Fairbit) to sit on the rails behind the leaders. They moved out in the straight and with plenty of gas still in the tank he bolted away to win two and a quarter lengths in front of Phebetay (Mandy Radecker).
Hicock Hand (Michael Cahill) placed third by one and quarter lengths.
Bailey was also impressed with the gelding’s romp home. “With a 58kg he’s not all that big so he did a pretty good job,” he said.
Tears’n’cheers has won prizemoney in all his seven starts which now includes two wins and four seconds amassing $123,000 counting $44,000 in QTIS bonuses.
“He’s been pretty consistent,” Bailey said.
“He didn’t get a lot of luck last time and on Saturday he got a nice run through the race. Got the run of the race actually and it was quite a good win.”
The gelding had his first metropolitan start a month earlier where he headed in as race favourite and placed second by a length and a quarter.
“He’s only a little fella but he’s a good little tryer and he’s quite a nice horse. He keeps putting himself there all the time.”
