Perfect start for Paprika

Paprika has stepped onto the turf as a two-year-old to watch after clinching her second career win in as many starts at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The filly’s second start followed a win at Toowoomba in the first two-year-old race in Queensland for the season when she romped home to score by six and a half lengths.
The margin could well have been the same at Eagle Farm in the Sea Eagle Electrical QTIS 2YO Fillies Plate 1000m if jockey Shane Scriven gave the filly free rein.
After jumping from barrier seven and getting a run on the rails, Scriven had Paprika (F2 General Nediym-Honi) nicely positioned to hit the front on turning and barely turn on the speed.
The winning margin over Annalisha (Jason Taylor) was a neck with Motown Lady (Matthew Palmer) in third place, a further four and a half lengths back.
Trainer Liam Birchley admitted Scriven “probably over did it a bit” by reserving Paprika’s energy stocks but was pleased with the result.
“She didn’t have to come off the bit at all so you couldn’t ask for much more than that,” Birchley said adding that he’d like a few more like her in his stables.

From just two starts Paprika has earned over $100,000 for her owners

“There wasn’t that much speed inside, a lot of first starters I suppose, and most of it was on her outside so she ended up being in the leading division on the fence.
“I nearly didn’t let her go around because I wasn’t sure if she would handle it (the slow track) but luckily he didn’t have to let go of her head too much and she got through it.”
Only four of the 13 runners in the line up had started in Toowoomba’s Next Financial Fitton Hopeful Plate 1300m a fortnight earlier.
“She had the benefit of having a run and she’d learnt a bit from that,” Birchley said.
“She definitely improved from her run (at Toowoomba) the only concern I had was the state of the track.”
From just two starts Paprika has picked up over $100,000 in prizemoney for her owners.
