John Wallace’s three-year-old Shoot Out has returned to the winners circle in grand fashion at Randwick in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes 1200m on Saturday, February 13.
The High Chaparral (IRE) gelding, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, went head-to-head with a top crop of three-year-olds who have their fair share of Group race placings during short careers.
This included Gai Waterhouse’s Manhattan Rain who ran second in the Group 1 Cox Plate last year and started at Randwick as $1.70 race favourite.
Gold Coast-based Shoot Out, who won by a nose, now boasts $297,300 from seven starts for Mount Isa owners, Graham and Linda Huddy.
The gelding’s three wins have also included the Group 2 Sires’ Produce at Eagle Farm in May 2009.
Wallace will look to add a Group 1 feather to Shoot Out’s cap in what is shaping as a successful southern campaign.
Also entertaining the idea of a successful stint during the Autumn Carnival, Gillian Heinrich’s three-year-old Sweepstaking claimed third in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes 1200m at Randwick.
Gai Waterhouse had revenge on the northern raiders with her three-year-old More Joyous beating the Gold Coast-based Sweepstaking by two and a quarter lengths, with Peter Snowden’s Trim splitting the pair.
The Not a Single Doubt filly, with Tim Clark onboard, had earned the opportunity to test southern waters by recording two wins on the trot at her home track and at Eagle Farm.
Sweepstaking has obviously taken a liking to the 1200 metre distance with three firsts, a second and two thirds from six starts.
