The aim of the series is to give a range of apprentices (junior and senior) from around Australia an opportunity to compete for their state, travel to different states and ride at different tracks.
The race is organised according to the rules agreed between the states for this series. This is not a race run in the fashion of the old style “Apprentice Cup” races. It is a series based on state versus state and is not a competition to find the champion apprentice of Australia as states nominate different apprentices during the series. The winning state is the one which accumulates the most points during the series.
Each state nominates its own apprentice for each leg. This gives each state the opportunity to nominate and give an opportunity to a range of apprentices during the series. Nominated apprentices may be of various levels bearing in mind that metropolitan apprentices may or may not be available. The race series is an excellent way to give young apprentices opportunities. Points are awarded to the state and the winning state will hold the trophy until next season.
Each state nominates a rider they consider suitable and deserving of the opportunity. Queensland is required to accept their nominations for the Queensland leg. The remainder of the field will be completed with Queensland apprentices to a maximum field size of 14.
The Gold Coast race is sponsored by the Queensland Government Department of Education and Training. A racing industry careers function is held in conjunction with the race. Guests are careers, training and education staff from Gold Coast and South-East schools, colleges and organisations who play a roll in assisting trainees to join the industry. Trophies are awarded to the winning rider, trainer and owners as well as to all participants.
Queensland Racing and the industry require the assistance and participation of trainers and owners in supporting this event which promotes the industry’s career opportunities regionally and nationally.
