Runaway Shadow has taken the honours in the 2008 Queensland Country Racing Burnett to Beach Series giving Eumundi owner Campbell Grant the $5000 owner bonus.
Runaway Shadow’s (M5 Ombra Della Sera-Star Duchess) success also gave her trainer Peter Blackwell the $3000 trainer bonus and apprentice jockey Erin Wilson the $2000 bonus.
The Burnett to Beach Series kicked off at Wondai on August 2, after Kilcoy was abandoned in late July, and Runaway Shadow started her Series campaign with a close second by a short half head behind the Mark Goodwin-trained Buckbeak (Michael Johnston).
The following week at Nanango she succeeded this time in claiming the win in the Class 4 Handicap 1200m.
A fortnight later at Gympie, Runaway Shadow headed in as race favourite and she didn’t let the punters down picking up her second win of the Series.
She had one more go a week later at Bundaberg where she unfortunately placed last but it was enough to claim the horse of the Series with 22 points doubling the points of the closest competitor Gallagher.
Peter Blackwell has his own training complex Runaway Lodge at Hivesville and he deliberately decided to track the Burnett to Beach Series with Runaway Shadow and it paid off.
Apprentice jockey Erin Wilson was onboard for all of Runaway Shadow’s starts to pick up her bonus.
“They were both good wins,” said Blackwell.
“She just won it well on her own with young Erin the apprentice. She just jumped out and won the races. She was on fire at the time.
“She’s easy to ride. She’s a good apprentice’s horse. She’s very well educated and she just goes good.
“It just placed out perfectly that’s all, they were just there one after another. Especially after Kilcoy got washed out, the first one and she was unlucky not to win at Wondai, she just got beat a half head and then the other two just fell into place perfectly.”
Runaway Shadow has proved an honest horse. “All my horses are consistent,” said Blackwell. The mare has picked up prizemoney at all her country starts except for her latest run at Bundaberg.
Other winners of the Series races included the Noel Doyle-trained Superlicious (Michael Tracey) at Beaudesert on August 16 and Gordon’s Time (Kazuki Mizobe), trained by Brian Challacombe, won at Bundaberg on August 30.
On the same weekend the Jeff Dixon-trained Gallagher won the Open Handicap 1100m at Gatton and the Bob Murray-trained The Plate rounded out the Series winning at Gayndah on September 13.
