Hey Elvis has again proved he is a horse to contend with winning the Xerox QTIS Class 6 Plate 1400m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, November 15.
The Bruce Hill-trained gelding made it back-to-back wins after claiming a win at City Pacific Doomben three weeks earlier.
With Paul Hammersley in the saddle, they ran up to third from the jump. After the turn it appeared to be only between the race leaders Hesashow (Luke Rolls), Heart of the Citi (Mandy Radecker) and Hey Elvis (G4 Clang-Queen of Song).
Hesashow dropped back and the battle became between Heart of the Citi and Hey Elvis. Hey Elvis edged away to win by two lengths ahead of the $3.10 race favourite.
Lucky Luna (Jim Byrne) made a great run to finish third by a long neck.
“I thought he raced terrific actually,” said Hill.
“It’s similar to the day he beat Heart of the Citi there last time, when he’s had a couple of runs off him and just followed him into the race and beat him.”
Hill’s instructions to Hammersley were influenced by the number of times the two horses had been up against each other.
“I said come out and be in the first three or four. Don’t let the grey horse (Heart of the Citi) get too far in front of you because he’s hard to run down,” said Hill.
“He’d done really well from his first one to his second one, he was just going terrific. Just with the run under his belt and a bit of work he’s really improved heaps.”
Only twice out of the prizemoney, Hey Elvis has earned connections $220,900 including $88,900 in QTIS bonuses. From his 11 starts he’s enjoyed four wins, three seconds and a third.
