There were highlights aplenty in a wonderful day of racing at Dalby on Saturday, February 13.
A barnstorming finish by Dulacca Jet to score a narrow win and the $32,000 winner’s cheque in the feature QTIS 600 2YO Plate had the crowd abuzz.
A blistering 1000 metre run by Fleet’N’Fast set a new class and course record.
Finally, a gutsy win by the topweight Morcombe in the Peter and Kay Hewson Cannonball Flying Handicap 1000m topped off the day.
A very big crowd turned out and were not disappointed with the racing and entertainment provided for them.
It was also a memorial day for former Dalby trainer Des Burns who past away four years ago. A large number of Des’ family and friends attended to honour and reminisce over his outstanding achievements during his long and illustrious career as a trainer.
There was fun for everyone at the end of proceedings, with novelty races for children of all ages, men, women and families. Competitors were rewarded by great prizes from sponsors organised by Shane Burns, Des’ son, and his partner Narelle, who did a marvellous job organising the races.
The club is now gearing up for their biggest meeting on Saturday, March 13 which features the Newmarket and Lightning Handicaps.
Racing action
Kiss The King was a lucky pickup ride for Carl Spry in the Murray’s Tyres and More Class B Handicap 1400m after replacing Jim Cook who broke his leg in a barrier incident at Toowoomba.
Kiss The King went straight to the lead and was never headed as he raced away from Hot Flushes in the straight for an easy win. Hot Flushes held second against the fast finishing Samantha’s Jewell.
Golden Ideal led Ramani to the turn in the Des Burns Memorial Maiden Plate 1200m. However, once they straightened young apprentice Shaun Guymer rode strongly hands and heels on Ramani, and the favourite drew away for a strong win.
Golden Ideal was a sound second with Alerts making up a lot of ground for third.
After taking the lead from It’s Thirsty Work entering the home straight, Lambert drew clear and looked all over a winner with 100 metres to travel in the Dalby Engine Rebuilders QTIS 600 2YO Plate 1000m.
Dulacca Jet was winding up wider out and jockey Jason Warrington really lifted the Jet Spur filly. She grabbed Lambert in the last couple of strides for a magnificent win.
True Blue Angel flew home late for third just ahead of Manahide.
The Exceed And Excel three-year-old gelding, Fleet’N’Fast, set a blistering pace from the start of the Dalby Price Rite Cars QTIS Class 3 Handicap and ran his rivals ragged in the run to the line.
In doing so he smashed both the class and course record for 1000 metres, held previously by Morcombe who ironically won the last race of the day but could not match the new time set by Fleet’N’Fast.
Wedding Lily tried hard for second spot and Monaleah put in a good first up effort to run third in a close finish for that position involving four runners.
In the final event, Morcombe took the lead shortly after the start of the Peter and Kay Hewson Cannonball Flying Open Handicap 1000m and led clearly into the straight.
The six-year-old looked set for a big win, however Tennessee Blue really knuckled down to the task and charged home to just fail to peg back Morcombe with a short neck separating the pair.
The Plate also put in a good performance to finish strongly for third just ahead of All Stellar and Obliviator.
