Ghetto Blaster delivered a job well done for connections at City Pacific Doomben on Saturday notching up his second win for the season in the UQ Sport Handicap 1350m.
Despite an unsettled start, Ghetto Blaster (H5 Lujain-Certain Blaze) made it a treble for jockey Glen Colless at the meeting after recording wins in the previous two races with Woody ‘n’ Buzz and Desdemona.
But it wasn’t an easy start for Colless as the five-year-old wanted to over-race in the early stages of the race after jumping well from barrier two.
“It’s always a bit of a worry the 1350m because he just doesn’t settle well. Saying that he came out and tugged for a hundred yards but he had cover and relaxed beautifully then,” Colless said.
Trainer Gillian Heinrich agreed: “Sometimes he just wants to get on with the job and there wasn’t a lot of pace in the race.”
“Glen suggested maybe the 1200m where they put a bit more pace on in the race; he’s better suited to that.
“The only reason the 1350m is a worry is if there’s no genuine pace. The horse can get the ground but you need the genuine pace so the horse can settle back a bit.”
Ghetto Blaster finished a clear one and a half lengths ahead of Mr Hornblower (Todd Pannell) with a further long neck back to Nexgen (Ric McMahon) in third.
One hundred metres out the favourite levelled with the leaders before stretching away to claim the win.
“I’ve ridden him a few times now and had a lot of success on him. It was just a matter of getting to the outside and he was always going to win,” Colless said.
The five-year-old has had three starts this season for two wins and a third at his last start on a heavy track.
“The horse is going enormous. I don’t think he should’ve got beaten last start. He got too far back on a heavy track and missed the kick a little bit which was unfortunate and he just couldn’t pick it up,” Heinrich said.
