Rockhampton investigation concludes
Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) today announced the outcome of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Rockhampton’s Race Two on July 17, 2008.
The race was subsequently declared a ‘no race’ due to incorrect barrier placement.
The investigation concluded that the incident occurred due to a number of factors but primarily because there was no 1300 metre distance marker in place and the starting point had not been measured and marked before the race meeting.
These omissions were particularly significant in light of the fact that the race was the first since September 2006 to run on the long loop over 1300 metres in Rockhampton and the race meeting was the first at which the Official Starter had started races in Rockhampton since 2003.
QRL Chairman Mr Bob Bentley said: “While incidents of this nature are very rare, when they occur it is important to thoroughly review the circumstances and take action to reduce the risk of it happening again.”
“In this case, I am satisfied that a proper review has been undertaken, the causes of the issue identified and that effective measures developed to avoid any re-occurrence.”
Noting that there will be a full rotation of Stewards from the Toowoomba, Townsville and Rockhampton regions to be announced in the near future, Mr Bentley added: “I am also pleased that the Director of Integrity Operations, Mr Jamie Orchard, has reintroduced the Stewards rotation policy.”
“I believe this is an important part of ensuring a high quality Stewarding service which further enhances the integrity of the racing industry in Queensland.”
