‘Fox’ Runs Rivals Ragged In Golden Stakes

WHILE many youngsters sell for inflated prices, in the excitement and glamour of yearling sales, Golden Fox, winner of Saturday’s Listed Richmond Grove Padthaway Chardonnay Golden Stakes at NCF Doomben, was not one of those.

Golden Fox (G2 Foxhound-Sweet Humam) was sold by his breeders, Pine Lodge Stud, as a weanling at the 2002 Inglis Australian Weanling sale in Sydney for $3,000. About a year later he was offered at the Magic Millions National Yearling sale on the Gold Coast.

Part-owner Michael Warren purchased the well-bred Golden Fox at that sale for just $2,000, which was probably a fraction of the price he would have bought if he did not have a pronounced swayback.

In the Golden Stakes, Golden Fox, ridden by Scott Seamer, raced in the lead and sprinted clear in the straight to win from Star Shiraz and Heavenly Cruise, to take his record to three wins from four starts and prizemoney of $44,900.

“He pulled up extremely shin sore at his first run when he failed in the Meynink Stakes but has kept improving since he was given a spell,” trainer Trevor Whittington said.

“I had tossed up about running him in the Ken Russell Classic at the Gold Coast on May 15, but will probably head towards the (Northern City Finance) Champagne Classic (at Doomben on May 22) before going on to the (Group 1) Sires Produce (on June 5).

“He is a little bit swaybacked but that doesn’t stop him from galloping and he is a good doer,” Whittington added.

Winning rider Scott Seamer predicted that Golden Fox was sure to win better than Listed races in the future.
