QUEENSLAND sired horses produced the goods to run
the quinella in the Group 1 Borelli Hand-Made Clothing
QTC Sires Produce Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Toowoomba filly Star Shiraz (F2 Sequalo-Starshine
Express) proved too strong for her rivals to win
by one and a half lengths from Midnight City (by
Lion Hunter) with the Shaun Dwyer-trained Rule Of
Engagement a close third.
The win gave Queensland-born jockey Glen Boss his
tenth Group 1 victory of the season and trainer Rex
Lipp his first Group 1 success in 15 years of training.
“I am pleased that it was my old sparring
partner Glen to ride my first Group 1 winner as he
has been riding for me on and off for years,” Lipp
said.
Lipp also paid tribute to Toowoomba jockey, Ron
Goltz, who had helped in educating Star Shiraz and
had ridden her in her first three starts.
“She’s a terrific little filly who always
tries her heart out and this was the race we targeted
her for,” Lipp said.
“If Glen thinks she can run the mile in the
T.J. Smith that is where we will head with her next,
otherwise she will go for a spell.”
Boss has encouraged Lipp to run the filly in the
Group 1 T.J. Smith over 1600m at Eagle Farm on June
14.
“She was very strong at the end of her race
and it wouldn’t hurt her at all to run in the
T.J. Smith over the mile,” Boss said. “It
was great to bring up my 10th Group 1 of the season
back here in Queensland.”
Boss now joins Damien Oliver and Shane Dye, who
had previously ridden 10 Group 1 winners in a season,
but is confident he can add to that total next weekend
at Eagle Farm.
Queensland Racing handicapper, Lester Grimmett,
has imposed a 1kg penalty on Star Shiraz for the
T.J. Smith, where the filly will now carry 54kg.
The filly’s owners, Ross and Michelle Boucher,
Stephen Bensen, Trevor and Di Fraser and Ron Newbury,
had all raced horses successfully with Lipp. The
trainer convinced them over a drink at the 2003 QBBS
yearling sale in Brisbane to buy her.
A bargain buy that cost the six owners just $15,000,
Star Shiraz took her earnings to $395,900, which
includes QTIS bonuses of $126,500 for her three wins
and four seconds from seven starts.
