SYDNEY jockey Corey Brown won his second BMW Queensland
Derby on Saturday, and as was the case in 2002, his
victory was on a son of former top class galloper,
Danewin.
Brown combined with trainer John Hawkes to win with
Toulouse Lautrec (G3 Danewin-Dancing Colour), which
beat the Victorian Devastating (Chris Munce) and
Sydneysider Set Up (Larry Cassidy).
“He got flattened four or five times through
the race and it was only his courage and determination
that pulled him through,” Brown said.
"Once he got balanced up in the straight he
really took off and put the race beyond doubt in
a few strides.”
Brown’s previous Queensland Derby win was
on another son of Danewin, County Tyrone for the
late Max Lees in 2002.
Hawkes’ son, Michael, who manages his Brisbane
stable, predicted a big future for Toulouse Lautrec.
“He is still learning what it's all about
and he's got so much improvement in him it's not
funny,” Hawkes said.
When Danewin was racing, Bob Thomsen, who prepared
yesterday’s Stradbroke winner, Thorn Park,
trained the stallion.
Despite winning five times at Group 1 level for
Thomsen, Danewin couldn’t crack a Derby win,
running second in both the Victoria and AJC Derbies
in his three-year-old season.
In the Victoria Derby, Danewin was beaten half a
length by Blevic, then in the following autumn he
was narrowly beaten by Ivory’s Irish in the
AJC Derby.
As well as his two sons that have won a Queensland
Derby, Danewin has also sired the 2003 Hong Kong
Derby winner Elegant Fashion.
