Vanquished Heading Home After
Pm’s Cup Win
CARNIVAL ‘king,’ Glen Boss, was back
in the spotlight at the Gold Coast, winning the G2
Carlton Draught Prime Minister’s Cup on the
Bede Murray-trained Vanquished.
In the only race on the day when a class or track
record was not broken, Vanquished capitalised on
the dawdling early pace to sprint home an easy winner
from Make Me A Miracle and Comforts.
Murray justified his last minute decision to bring
Vanquished north after his Wagga Cup win but quickly
called an immediate halt to his winter campaign after
taking out the $300,000 PM’s Cup.
“He’s done a good job and I want to
give him a break now and get ready for the spring.
He should make a lot of improvement as a stayer.
I think he could be a real Caulfield Cup horse,” Murray
said.
The slow early pace set by Mowerman was reflected
in the overall time, which was 2.51 seconds outside
the course record on a day when the track was on
fire.
The race was not run to suit the backmarkers, including
New Zealander Distinctly Secret, which did a good
job to finish fifth (from last) and lost few fans
from a Doomben Cup perspective.
The Mark Walker stable had its carnival confidence
boosted when boom youngster, King’s Chapel,
produced his best form to win the Independent Fuel
Supplies Gold Coast Guineas.
Top Kiwi jockey, Opie Bosson, brought King’s
Chapel from worse than midfield to score a race record
win from Drunken Joker and Power and Gold, which
raced wide throughout.
Walker said Saturday’s G1 Carlton Draught
Doomben 10,000 was now back on the agenda for King’s
Chapel, which has won nine of his 13 starts.
The decision was made to add blinkers to King’s
Chapel after he failed badly at his Australian debut
in the Richmond Grove BTC Classic. “His run
was too bad to believe and I still paid up for the
10,000,” Walker said.
The one downside on a big day at the Coast came
for top jockey Chris Munce, who incurred a seven
meeting suspension and a $1,000 fine over interference
caused to four runners shortly after the start of
the Russell Memorial.
MEANWHILE, Queensland Racing handicappers today
penalised Saturday’s Goodwood Handicap winner,
Super Elegant, one kilo (to 55kg) for next month’s
AAMI Stradbroke Handicap.
