Boss looking to more Group
1 success in Brisbane
ALL conquering jockey Glen Boss is looking forward
to chasing another Stradbroke success after snaring
five Group 1 wins during the Sydney autumn.
Writing in today’s Sydney Morning Herald,
Boss said: “How good it was to be back in the
zone. Five G1 wins in a memorable week of the autumn
carnival at Royal Randwick. Shades of Flemington
last November when I rode Makybe Diva to win the
Melbourne Cup.
“Carnival time brings out the best in jockeys.
Just like golfers target the majors and tennis players
the grand slams.
“For me the zone comes easily. Knowing my
wife, Sloane and kids, Tayte and Carter, are home
with everything under control certainly eases any
pressure. Sloane and the children are the backbone
of any success I have. The relationship we have is
something special.”
Boss highlighted to the SMH the significance of
his win on Starcraft in the AJC Derby for Gold Coast
trainer Garry Newham and owner Paul Makin.
“When I first arrived on the Gold Coast from
Gympie as a 16-year-old, Newham was the first trainer
I really got to know on a personal level. We are
still great mates and it’s a friendship that
will last forever.
“As for Paul Makin, I met him for the first
time when winning the Chipping Norton Stakes on Starcraft
in March and he is a top bloke.
“Starcraft held his end of the bargain when
we got up to win the Derby in the final bound of
the 2400m classic. Two Group 1 races on Derby day
and two victories. Could it get better?” Boss
wrote.
“There was still Private Steer to come. She’s
a mare on which you can ad-lib. She lends herself
to exciting racing and that’s what this great
industry needs.
“The champion, Lonhro, retired last Saturday
and was beaten when the victim of circumstances,
but Private Steer may be the next big thing.
“Private Steer backed up to win the Group
1 All Aged Stakes the following Saturday with a similar
performance. The 2040m of the Cox Plate will be perfect
for her. Exciting times ahead.”
Boss told the SMH that next stop was Brisbane for
the winter carnival and hopefully another Stradbroke
win. “Last year I rode Private Steer to victory
in the race. It would be a dream fulfilled if she
went on and won the Cox Plate.”
HOOFNOTE:
At the Gold Coast carnival launch during the week,
connections confirmed that Starcraft would lead the
field on to the track for the Prime Minister’s
Cup on Saturday May 15.
Dwyer chasing Oaks win in Adelaide
TOOWOOMBA trainer Shaun Dwyer will saddle up his
first South Australian starter tomorrow when promising
filly Revolutions contests the Group 3 Lakewood Stud
Stakes at Cheltenham Park.
Dwyer, who has already enjoyed dual Group 1 success
with Regimental Gal in Victoria this year, has his
stable star geared for a return to local racing in
next weekend’s Richmond Grove BTC Cup at NCF
Doomben.
Revolutions was an eye-catching last start second
to subsequent AJC Oaks winner, Wild Iris, in the
Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick.
Dwyer elected to by-pass the Oaks, which Wild Iris
took out in runaway style, to head instead to Adelaide. “My
only concern is that she has been up for a while,
racing over the summer in three States,” he
said.
“She has come along in leaps and bounds in
her first campaign and just keeps improving. We decided
to target Adelaide for the shorter fillies races
because she wasn’t really trained for the 2400m
of the AJC Oaks.
“Her main aim in South Australia is the (Group
1) Schweppes Oaks (at Morphettville on May 8). She
hasn’t had any trouble adapting to the opposite
way of going since arriving in Adelaide,” Dwyer
said.
