Regimental Gal A ‘Doubtful’ Stradbroke Starter

TRAINER Shaun Dwyer has warned that boom filly Regimental Gal, favourite for Saturday’s $200,000 Richmond Grove BTC Cup at NCF Doomben, is a doubtful starter in next month’s Stradbroke Handicap.

Dwyer has told Glenn Davis from AAP Racing in Brisbane: “She’ll run this Saturday and I feel confident she’ll be hard to beat at weight-for-age. However, the Stradbroke is highly unlikely.”

Regimental Gal, the Queensland favourite that boasts her own website, has not raced at home since winning the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January last year.

Dwyer plans to spell her for two months after her main mission of the Brisbane carnival, the $500,000 Group One Carlton Draught Doomben 10,000 on May 22.

The chances of Regimental Gal starting in the AAMI Stradbroke were boosted following the release of weights for the million-dollar Group 1 sprint when she received 52kg.

But since her dual Group 1 success in Melbourne in the autumn, Dwyer has had his long range sights on the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin in December, a race that was won twice by the Queenslander Falvelon.

Top jockey Michael Rodd will be reunited with the millionaire filly in Saturday’s carnival pipe-opener at NCF Doomben.

Melbourne rider Steven King was his replacement when she won the G1 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley but came in for some criticism of his ride when she finished fifth in the G2 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick.

”Michael has done a good job on the filly and we feel it’s best to have a local rider on her for the carnival here,” Dwyer said. “I was happy with her work at Clifford Park (on Tuesday).”

Meanwhile, another potential carnival star has been sidelined by injury. The Gai Waterhouse stable has been forced to shelve plans to bring last season’s two-year-old star, Hasna, north.

Dual G1 winner, Hasna, was scheduled to start in the $100,000 Richmond Grove BTC Classic for three-year-olds at Doomben on Saturday. But she jarred up in a track gallop.

Waterhouse will be represented in Saturday’s $100,000 G3 Doomben Carnival Cup by So Assertive, to be ridden by Chris Munce.

She also has Shower of Roses, National Treasure, Hec Of A Party, Platinum Scissors and Martique on the short list to head to Queensland.
